Some of the muscles that control the toes begin in the lower leg and travel into the foot through long tendons. These are known as extrinsic foot muscles. Other smaller muscles are located entirely within the foot and are called intrinsic foot muscles.

The intrinsic muscles help stabilize the toes, support the arches, and adjust the foot to changes in pressure. The extrinsic muscles contribute additional strength and help coordinate larger movements.

Healthy toe function requires more than the ability to curl the toes. It also involves:

Marble Pickups

Place several marbles or other small, safe objects on the floor. Pick them up one at a time using the toes and place them into a container.

Avoid this exercise if bending the toes causes joint pain or cramping.

Supported Balance Practice

Stand near a sturdy counter and keep your hands close to the surface. Practise standing with your feet together or balancing briefly on one leg.
