Odorous Feet

Why do feet smell?

There are approximately 250,000 sweat glands in your feet. This is more than any other part of the body and it’s not surprising that feet sweat quickly.

The skin becomes wet from sweating, which creates an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria in the environment. Socks and shoes trap sweat and bacteria and can make foot odor worse.

Your shoes, socks, as well as your skin, can be contaminated by bacteria. The bacteria spreads, eating dead skin cells and oil on your feet. The bacteria release a stench as it breaks down.

Although smelly feet may occur by themselves, certain foot conditions such as athlete’s feet or athlete’s foot can also cause odorous feet. Due to the type and amount of bacteria that grows, up to 15% of people can have very stinky feet (Kyetococcus Sedentarius).

How to treat and prevent feet from smelling?

It’s usually not difficult to treat odorous feet. Keep your feet dry and clean, and change your shoes frequently.

You can treat your feet by yourself if they are dry or smelly.

  • Wash your feet once per day with antibacterial soap (a pharmacist can provide more information).
  • Dry your feet thoroughly after they are wet, particularly between your toes.
  • You should not wear the same pair twice in one day.
  • Change your socks at least once per day.
  • Keep your toenails clean and short. Use a foot file to remove any rough skin.

You might consider this if you are prone to sweaty feet:

  • Spray deodorant/antiperspirant for your feet. A normal underarm product works equally well and is less expensive.
  • Put medicated insoles in your shoes, which will deodorize.
  • Use a powdered foot to absorb sweat. A pharmacist can provide advice.
  • Socks for sweaty feet: Some socks are made to keep your feet dry. You can also get antibacterial socks.
  • As they allow your feet to breathe, leather and canvas shoes are better than plastic.
  • Always wear socks with closed-toe shoes

When is it time to see a Foot Specialist?

It is a common problem that usually goes away. It can sometimes be a sign that you have a medical condition.

If you are concerned about excessive sweating or if the simple steps to reduce foot odor do not work, consult your Foot Care Specialist.

You can also ask your doctor to prescribe strong antiperspirant or to refer you to iontophoresis. This delivers mild electricity through water to your feet and combats excessive sweating.
